With time flying by at what seems like record speed, the moment has once again arrived in California to set the clocks forward!! On Sunday, March 9, many time zones in North America will shift to Daylight Saving Time...setting the clocks forward by one hour! Be sure to adjust your clocks!!
Most of us have also heard the saying that “time heals.”
Reflecting on this time change and extended daylight hours, I am reminded that this Spring marks 30 years since my diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis (May 23, 1996).
Upon diagnosis and the recommendation of my neurologist to incorporate yoga to help support my physical and mental well-being, I left the hospital 30 years ago determined to do whatever I could to help myself. Within 72 hours, I began my journey with Iyengar Yoga.
Through a dedicated daily practice, I have been able to lessen the severity of many frightening—and at times physically disabling—MS related symptoms I once experienced. Thankfully, I've been able to keep my condition in remission since 2001. Annual MRI reports of my brain and spine have since shown a reduction in the number and size of lesions on my brain, even though many still exist. The lesions on the myelin sheath in my cervical and thoracic spinal cord remain, though gratefully they are also inactive.
That said, I am under no illusion that the simple passage of time has “healed” or cured me; I still have and live with MS.
Over the years through applied experience, patience, time, and the daily discipline of yoga, underpinned by yoga philosophy, have collectively helped ease my initial fears and guided me in adapting my lifestyle with acceptance and, hopefully, a measure of grace.
Yours in health, as always,
Garth

March is MS Awareness Month |
March is recognized as Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Awareness Month—a time to raise understanding about MS and support those affected by this neurological condition. MS impacts the central nervous system and can affect movement, vision, and many aspects of daily life.
MS can manifest in different ways and at varying stages, affecting individuals with a wide range of mobility and functional limitations—physical, cognitive, emotional, and mental. Many people living with MS may experience “invisible” symptoms that may not be easily recognized by others.
By spreading awareness and compassion, hopefully we can help build a more informed and supportive world for everyone affected by MS.
I have shared part of my personal journey in this book, in the hope that it offers some insight, encouragement, and a deeper understanding of what it means to live with MS. Yoga and Multiple Sclerosis by Garth McLean |
